The authorities of the United States continue to battle Mexican drug cartels. Among the latest actions carried out by the Department of Justice, the recent massive indictment against 41 alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) stands out, who were primarily operating in Houston and Galveston, cities in Texas.

The document, presented during the afternoon of April 1, states that from December 28, 2018 to April 22, 2020, the accused individuals allegedly operated and distributed drugs smuggled from Mexico to the United States.

The main leader of this group was identified as Roque Zamudio Mendoza, a 52-year-old man from Mexico, who was accused of being the “main source of drugs” for the CJNG in the United States.

The other people involved allegedly transported cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine from Texas to other cities in the country of the stars and stripes, such as New Orleans; Pensacola, Florida; Atlanta; Nashville, Tennessee; and Chicago.

But, above all. Why does the criminal organization led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, ‘El Mencho’, have interest or presence in Texas?

The interest of the also called ‘Cartel of the Four Letters’ is attributed to several strategic factors that are relevant to its criminal operations. The main one refers to its geographical location, since the state of the Lone Star shares an extensive border with Mexico, which facilitates the illicit trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people.

As a consequence of the fact that the US is one of the countries with the highest consumption of illicit drugs, Texas has become a lucrative market for the distribution of narcotics, but not only that. In May 2023, Univision reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized a large drug laboratory built by the CJNG.

The narcotics production center consisted of a large trailer located near the city of Tyler, north of Texas. According to the aforementioned source, men working for ‘El Mencho’ processed methamphetamine on a “massive scale” inside.

On the other hand, the Texan territory is of great interest due to its high transportation infrastructure: Texas has a developed network of roads and highways that facilitate the movement and distribution of drugs to other regions of the United States.

Likewise, it is pointed out that the CJNG has a presence in this region due to the diversification of its criminal activities. Not only in drug trafficking, but the organization has become involved in the trafficking of weapons and human trafficking, using Texas as a strategic point for these operations.

It should be noted that, according to an investigation by The Courier Journal, the CJNG also has a presence in Dallas, Laredo and El Paso.

According to the document ‘Protection of the National Territory of the United States: Combatting the flow from the Southwest border’, the CJNG has at least four distribution centers in major US cities. These cities are Los Angeles, California; Seattle, Washington; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Chicago, Illinois.
