The United States Warns That Drug Cartels Cause Instability In Mexico.

In a recent appearance before the Armed Services Committee of the United States House of Representatives, Gregory Michael Guillot, the newly appointed commander of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), warned about the increasing role that drug cartels in Mexico are playing in promoting conditions of instability in the region.

Guillot, who assumed his position on February 5, 2024, emphasized how these criminal organizations could be providing strategic advantages to adversaries of the United States. According to his statements, “transnational criminal organizations in Mexico and other parts of the Western Hemisphere continue to foster instability and challenge the rule of law.”

It also highlights the growing audacity of the cartels in directly confronting security forces and government officials in Mexico.

This situation emphasizes the importance of maintaining and deepening security cooperation with Mexico to counter these organizations effectively.

The current relationship between the Northern Command and the Mexican military forces, particularly with the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA) and the Navy (SEMAR), is focused on fighting transnational threats and strengthening defenses against potentially hostile state and non-state actors.

Guillot insisted that “The ties between the US Northern Command and our Mexican military partners are broad, resilient, and focused on expanding our combined capability to defend and protect North America from countless state and non-state threats.”

One of the problems pointed out by Guillot in his testimony was the willingness of the cartels to confront the Mexican army and security forces directly.

These actions highlight the complexity of their challenge and the need for a joint strategy between the United States and Mexico to address this issue.

“Cartels have also shown a growing willingness to directly confront the Army, security forces, and Mexican government officials, highlighting the need for ongoing security cooperation with our partners in Mexico,” stated Guillot.

Another relevant aspect of their presentation was the mention of efforts to reduce Mexico’s dependence on equipment and weapons from countries such as China and Russia.

This policy not only seeks to strengthen operational compatibility between the armed forces of the United States and Mexico but also, according to Guillot, counteract the influence of competitors in the region.

“These efforts and investments have simultaneously strengthened our common security and, at the same time, helped reduce Mexico’s reliance on Russian and People’s Republic of China equipment and contracts, which often come with expensive conditions,” emphasized the American general.

The USNORTHCOM plays a crucial role in the defense of American territory and in protecting national interests in North America.

Founded on April 25, 2002, after the attacks of September 11, this entity of the United States Department of Defense focuses on providing military support to civil authorities and securing the continental territories of the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas against both internal and external threats.

Guillot’s intervention at the Capitol highlights the importance of strengthening the relationships and cooperation in security between the United States and Mexico in the face of everyday challenges such as drug trafficking and other transnational threats. His appointment as head of the Northern Command and his focus on these issues indicate the priority they represent for the current administration of the United States.
