In June 2023, the Northeast Cartel (CDN) recorded and disseminated a video directed at President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), his cabinet, and the general population.
One of the aims of this material was to make a statement regarding the recent accusations of alleged proximity between the federal leader and the Los Zetas cartel before the 2006 elections.
The sender of the message, whose identity was kept confidential, referred to the report published in The New York Times and to the statements made by the person who identified themselves as Celso Ortega Jiménez, leader of Los Ardillos, to the media outlet Latinus.
The facts linking the Zetas organization to the campaigns of the current president of the republic are not actual, and we clarify that Commander 42 does not know the masked man who identifies himself as Celso Ortega Jiménez. He never spoke to him, let alone about that subject.
In the report presented by Latinus on February 15, 2024, a man with a covered face – who claimed to be Celso Ortega – said that Alejandro Treviño Morales, aka ‘Z 42’, was at odds with Nazario Moreno and asked him to go to Nueva Italia, Michoacán, to “do politics for Andrés Manuel López Obrador because they were paying for the campaign.”
“He [Treviño Morales] said that once Andrés Manuel López Obrador won, Los Zetas would have control of the whole country because he was going to give it to them,” the man interviewed by the media mentioned.
However, the messenger of the CDN (born as a break-off from Los Zetas) said that during that time, Nazario Moreno, also known as ‘El Chayo,’ was an ally of those with the last letter, so he could not have had enmity with ‘El Z 42’.
The words said by the masked person who claims to be Celso Ortega Jiménez are incoherent statements from those individuals, or perhaps it may not even be him. “During those dates, that group [Los Ardillos] was a splinter group of the Beltrán Leyva,” he added.
It is worth noting that, during that electoral process, the Beltrán Leyva brothers maintained their alliance with the Sinaloa Cartel and positioned themselves as one of the groups opposed to Los Zetas.
“We didn’t get involved, we don’t get involved, and we won’t get involved in politics […] How was [‘El Chayo’] going to have Celso Ortega Jiménez brought to Nueva Italia, which was under the control of Los Zetas,” stated the heavily armed individual.
