After Amado Carrillo’s son confessed what he did after his father’s death in a hospital in Mexico City, it was revealed that the leader of the Juárez Cartel was a forward-thinking person who did not usually bury his money like other drug traffickers.

It was the mid-90s, and the majority of Mexican drug traffickers were people with a low level of education. As a result, they often chose to bury their money, something that the Colombians also did, as if it were a pirate treasure.

‘The Lord of the Skies’ was one of the first bosses to stop engaging in those types of actions, considering them impractical. Instead, he kept a portion of his earnings in safes and invested the rest, avoiding keeping low liquidity and constantly having his money at stake.

Carrillo Leyva stated that after the death of his father in 1997, he, his mother, and his siblings began to search for money in the hidden safes that Amado had, but they only found 7 million dollars. “The Lord of the Skies” was so modern that the idea of hiding money in secret locations, as the Colombian and Mexican drug lords did, seemed old-fashioned and impractical to him,” reads the book “Los Señores del Narco” by journalist Anabel Hernández.

Amado Carrillo’s son, along with his mother, only had access to those 7 million found inside a safe, while the rest was invested in companies, and also some assets were purchased, which would not be returned to their family members under the argument that they were confiscated or that the capital could not be touched.

In the end, the financial modernity that Amado had did not benefit his relatives, who were unable to recover a portion of his fortune, which remained among his partners, friends, and family.

In addition to building a large criminal empire, ‘The Lord of the Skies’ also invested in legitimate businesses, such as when he purchased shares of the financial group Anáhuac for 30 million dollars. In that transaction, he hired the services of the panista Diego Fernández de Cevallos, who allegedly received 4 million pesos for his services.

Amado Carrillo had bought shares through the businessman Jorge Bastida Gallardo and Zepeda Méndez, for which the legal services of PAN lawyer Diego Fernández de Cevallos were hired. He received four million pesos for facilitating the transaction.
