The inhabitants of Michoacán have had to learn to live amidst the constant noise of gunfire due to the ongoing confrontations between different criminal groups vying for control of the region. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and La Familia Michoacana are just two of the largest and most violent ones.
Last year, 1,438 people were murdered in the state -1,177 with a firearm- and the majority of them as a result of the drug trafficking war, which left a peculiar event this afternoon on a road in the municipality of Zitácuaro.
Residents of the region alerted the authorities of the presence of an unexploded fragmentation grenade that reportedly fell from a CJNG command while heading to carry out an attack against a public official.
According to the report from the Secretary of Public Security of Zitácuaro, the explosive was found on Federal Highway 15, near La Palma neighborhood, and would have been used to attack the life of the head of said department, Conrado Corral Leyva.

The intelligence work of the Secretariat of Public Security confirmed that William Edwin Rivera Padilla, aka “El Barbas”, is responsible for the failed assassination attempt and “losing” a grenade on a road in Zitácuaro.
The reasons behind the attack indicate that they could be the constant security operations in the region, which have resulted in blows to the structure of the CJNG cells.
Another hypothesis that is circulating regarding the origin of aggression is linked to the supposed betrayal of Conrado Corral to “El Barbas”, which was spread through various narcomantas signed by the people from Jalisco.
The alleged political-criminal relationship between the head of Public Security in Zitácuaro and the CJNG plaza chief was revealed in March 2023 with the leak of a phone call between both individuals.
The Beardsman – Are we going to have peace or not? I don’t want you to leave the town because you are my friend. Let’s smooth things over and stop all this nonsense, man.
Conrado – No, it’s not that I don’t want to.
El Barbas – Well, stop it with that. I’ll send you your resource like before, Conrado.
Conrado – That’s a whole other matter, don’t be telling me bullsh*t. You do your thing and I’ll do mine, it’s as simple as that, respect between gentlemen and that’s it.
El Barbas – And you’re not going to be pressuring people?
Conrado – No, to no one.
Despite the scandal involving the phone call, Conrado Corral retained his position and the violence in Zitácuaro intensified due to the alleged change of loyalty by the head of Public Security.
It is worth remembering that prior to the appearance of the narcobanners next to the bodies of three people, a video was disseminated in which the victims are interrogated; in the recordings, they admit to stealing and selling drugs under the orders of “commander Reséndiz of the National Guard”, whose loot is handed over to “commander Conrado.” The video does not clarify, but it is presumed that the hitmen who are interrogating are under the orders of the plaza boss of the CJNG in Zitácuaro.
