Recently, the Central California District Attorney’s Office in the United States issued an 18-count indictment against 10 individuals as part of an operation called ‘Dead Hand’.
Through a statement, the Department of Justice pointed out that one of the objectives of this investigation is a criminal network that, at least through March 2023, coordinated the exportation of cocaine from Jalisco to the United States and Canada.
As the leader of this scheme, the Prosecution identified Jesus Ruiz Sandoval Jr., a 45-year-old man based in Guadalajara described as a “high-level drug trafficker” currently on the run from justice.
In order to launch his criminal “business,” Sandoval Jr. apparently teamed up with two other men in the capital of Jalisco: John Joe Soto, 42 years old, and Eduardo Carvajal, 50 years old. The latter was identified by authorities as another high-profile drug trafficker who “exports drugs from the US to Canada.”
These three individuals, according to investigations, would have acted as suppliers for a large organization headed by Robert Scoppa, a major drug buyer linked to the Montreal Mafia, a Canadian criminal group led by the Rizzuto family.
Among the people against whom the prosecutor’s office issued charges are also Ayush Sharma, Subham Kumar, Carlos Barragán, Corell Carbajal Garcia, Humberto Luis Bermejo, and Esteban Sinhue Mercado.
The accusation issued on January 4th includes charges for drug trafficking conspiracies, conspiracy to import cocaine, conspiracy to export drugs, distribution and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, possession of a firearm for drug trafficking purposes and possession of ammunition.
The operations of this group were possible through Canadian merchants and carriers who made continuous and brief trips to Los Angeles, California.
There, large shipments of cocaine and methamphetamine were collected, which were then sent to Canada via tractor trailers with semi-trailers designed to withstand long-distance transportation.
Until the announcement of these accusations, the authorities had managed to make several arrests, including that of Robert Scoppa, whom the US is seeking to extradite from Montreal. On the other hand, the three Mexicans accused as part of this criminal organization are still free.
