Edgar Valdez Villarreal, ‘La Barbie’, was one of the most important drug traffickers of the 2000s, belonging to the Beltrán Leyva Cartel. He gained immediate fame for being a key player in the creation of “La Federación,” the alliance of various criminal groups to confront Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel.
“La Barbie” arrived in Mexico in the late 90s, after having several legal problems with authorities in the United States. At just 19 years old, he had involuntarily killed a person while driving his car, and was also accused of being involved in the sale of marijuana.
It was then that for a long period he was operating in Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, and parts of northeastern Mexico, the land of the Gulf Cartel, where he was the lieutenant of Arturo Beltrán Leyva, who, after the war ended, would send him to another area.
‘El Güero’ quickly gained the trust of Arturo Beltrán Leyva, whom he met when he arrived in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. After the disbandment of La Federación in 2004, he was sent to Guerrero where he became the leader of hitmen, recruiting gunmen including several agents from the Federal Investigations Agency.

From that moment on, a war would begin in the port of Acapulco, where it fought against the Zetas and local criminal groups. As a result, bodies with signs of violence and murdered police officers began to appear, making it one of the most violent episodes to have ever been experienced in Guerrero.
While the war was at its peak, ‘El Güero’ proudly strolled through Acapulco, either in luxurious cars and dressed in designer clothes, while at night he was seen in nightclubs with many women, who were his weakness and even once almost died at the hands of two women, who were sent by his enemies.

It was in the year 2006 when ‘El Güero’ paid a newspaper to publish a statement in which he demanded that the authorities take action against Los Zetas. He specifically requested the next president to go against them as they were committing acts of terrorism by targeting innocent people.
“I do not intend to appear as a white dove, nor do I want to clean up my image, because I am sure of what I have done and of my responsibility,” wrote ‘La Barbie’ to the man who would become the next president of Mexico.
