In May 2023, the sons of José Alfredo Cárdenas Martínez, also known as El Contador, were arrested. El Contador was identified as the alleged leader of the Gulf Cartel, and also the nephew of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén. However, in January 2024, a judge determined the release of at least one of El Contador’s sons, named Axel Alfredo.
It was on May 9th of last year that Infobae Mexico reported on the arrest of Axel Alfredo “N” in Tamaulipas. Two days later, authorities confirmed the capture of both the individual and his brother.
The records indicate that Axel Alfredo was released on January 20th, as reported by journalist René Cruz on MVS. When Axel Alfredo was arrested with his brother Alen Alexis, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection detailed that they were related to a criminal organization “dedicated to drug trafficking and human trafficking in Tamaulipas.”
Recently, Axel Alfredo was released along with a man identified as Jesus Roberto “C”, the latter being an alleged member of the mentioned criminal group.
It should be noted that the brothers took over the leadership of the criminal organization, according to federal authorities, after the capture of El Contador.
“They are considered the main generators of violence and responsible for 22 roadblocks in said municipalities, carried out on April 30, May 2, and 3, 2023,” detailed the SSPC on that occasion.”
Some of the roadblocks mentioned by the authorities were captured on video and at the end of April last year, the authorities reported the death of two people. On that occasion, in one of the recordings, a caravan of around 40 vehicles could be seen.
