Strong security operations were deployed throughout the municipality of Zitácuaro, Michoacán, due to reports of multiple shootings in the towns of La Encarnación and San Andrés, allegedly caused by a confrontation between members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and another criminal group.
Videos taken by residents of the region and posted on social media showed the detonations that could be heard in the distance during Wednesday night and extended until early Thursday morning; others shared posts warning the population of armed confrontations in different parts of the municipality, causing chaos and panic among the inhabitants.
The news of a supposed suspension of classes at all levels also began to circulate, information that the Secretary of Education of the State never confirmed; as well as the warning that armed men were on the streets “recruiting” young people by force and “abusing” young girls.
Despite the security operation, the authorities did not find any criminal group in the region, nor were there any arrests. The shots were, however, real.
According to sources from the General State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) cited by La Silla Rota, the chaos that trapped the inhabitants of Zitácuaro was caused by shots fired into the air by the men of William Edwin Rivera Padilla, alias “El Barbas”, head of the CJNG in the eastern region of Michoacán.
The cartel’s response should be due to the dismantling of a drug camp and an illegal cockpit detected by the Mexican Army, the National Guard and the Civil Guard of the State after a series of operations against organized crime in the municipality.
It is worth remembering that on January 7th, in the municipality of Zinapécuaro, members of the National Guard clashed in shots against members of the CJNG who were traveling in three trucks cloned with the logos of the state prosecutor’s office, which resulted in one person dead.
Zinapécuaro is located 88 kilometers north of Zitácuaro, near the border with Guanajuato, an area also with presence of the CJNG that orchestrated an attack against Alan Martínez Durán, alias “El Primo”, and against the Deputy Director of the Municipal Police, Yodán Reyes Gòmez.
Despite the fact that the villagers pointed out the presence of several dead from the violent day that lasted until the morning of Sunday, January 7, the official report was of a presumed hitman killed and two others injured.
Unofficial versions report a supposed “settling of scores” after “El Primo’s” “betrayal” of leaving the CJNG and joining Cárteles Unidos, while the faction led by “El Barbas” joined the Hurtado Olascoaga brothers to form La Nueva Familia Michoacana.
