The inhabitants of Chiapas have raised an alert for the presence and operation of criminal groups, pointing out that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, the two groups with the most presence in Mexico, are the ones fighting each other and as a result, civilians are affected.
The conflict and operations of criminal groups have been documented on several occasions, just last Monday, January 22, a recording circulated in which a group of armed individuals threatened El Güero Pulseras, a man identified as the presumed plaza boss of the Sinaloa Cartel who responded to orders from Ismael El Mayo Zambada.
Faced with the security situation that the entity is currently facing, the community of Chicomuselo shared a statement in which they identified a strategy, apparently carried out by the so-called “cartel of the four letters,” that would be using the inhabitants for their conflict with the Sinaloa Cartel.
Specifically, they point out that an organization known as El MAÍZ, which has been linked to the cartel led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, El Mencho. In the statement shared on Tuesday, January 23, it can be read that this cell is a paramilitary group that operates in the municipalities of Frontera Comalapa and Chicomuselo.
“In that region of Chiapas, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel used the strategy of waging war against the Sinaloa Cartel, using people and communities by force. This requires the CJNG to have a justification called a social base that gives a different face to their war,” reads the document signed by the Chicomuselo Civil Society.”
Additionally, they identified that the Sinaloa Cartel also has a presence in Frontera, as well as in the mountains, as well as in Chamic. They even discovered that this arrangement allows them to “have control and be able to surround, besiege, or simply not let go” of their rivals from the CJNG.
The inhabitants point out that amidst the conflict between criminals, there are people who seek to defend themselves. It is worth remembering that on January 13th, a caravan of trucks allegedly from the Sinaloa Cartel was captured in Chiapas.
In another part of the document, they accused that the authorities are aware of some of the movements of the criminals: “The CDS operates from communities that, as the National Guard (GN) and the National Defense Secretariat (SDN) know, that is, the army. But, as in any war, there are people in the middle who defend themselves, who resist,” they expressed in the file, which was shared by journalist Gabriela Coutiño through social media.
The statement comes after a video circulated on January 16th in which a member of the Army, accompanied by other uniformed individuals, threatened one of the inhabitants, since they had placed barbed wire to prevent the passage of criminal groups.
“Please remain quiet, everyone else. If you are gentlemen and have them on, remain silent. And you, who was screaming, don’t dare do it again. I have you located,” said the officer pointing at someone who was not caught on the recording.
But in the first days of 2024 there were reports, also from residents of Chicomuselo, of an alleged confrontation that would have lasted for hours and after which the death of 20 people was reported, according to a statement from January 8th. They even mentioned that one of the criminal groups would have the power over the municipal seat.
On the other hand, the General Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) of Chiapas denied that there have been reports of violent actions and even assured that: “In Chicomuselo, peace and security prevail,” as authorities indicated on January 9.
