On a tranquil morning at Chicxulub Puerto beach in Yucatán, two foreign visitors encountered an unfamiliar dark lump amidst the sand. Promptly alerting the authorities, it was soon discovered that the mysterious material was, in fact, a significant quantity of cocaine. In total, 25 bricks of the drug were found, wrapped in a bag entangled with algae and shells, suggesting its journey through the ocean.

The Ministry of Public Security (SSP) of Yucatán quickly notified federal authorities due to the serious nature of the find. Responding to the scene were members of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the National Guard, and the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), all converging to secure the area and investigate the narcotics. A Federal Ministerial Police from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) confirmed upon inspection that the material was indeed cocaine, with individual packages totaling 25 bricks. The discovery was thoroughly documented and shared via social networks on the night of Saturday, December 23, along with images of the security personnel at the scene.
While the identities of the individuals who stumbled upon the narcotics were not disclosed, the event has underscored the ongoing drug issues facing the region. Interestingly, the same weekend saw another narcotics-related incident in Tulum, Quintana Roo. A seemingly innocuous scene of a man practicing yoga on the beach quickly escalated into a chase involving a suspect in a blue swimsuit and uniformed naval personnel. The outcome of the pursuit remains unclear, but it’s indicative of the persistent drug activities in the area.

Yucatán is known to be a strategic location for criminal groups due to its connections with Europe and South America and routes towards the center and north of Mexico. The Caribbean route, in particular, is reputed to be a preferred path for narcotics trafficking, drawing attention from various cartels. According to reports, including military documents leaked by the Guacamaya group, the region is rife with local groups that have forged alliances with larger criminal organizations. These alliances aim to maintain a presence across strategic points in Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche, ensuring the flow of illicit activities.
The Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), led by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (“El Mencho”), is reportedly in conflict with other significant groups in the area, including the Sinaloa Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, and Los Pelones. This competitive landscape creates a constant struggle for dominance, influencing the security and stability of the region.
The incidents in Chicxulub Puerto and Tulum are stark reminders of the ongoing challenges faced by Mexican authorities in combating the drug trade. As cartels continue to vie for control and exploit these lucrative routes, the need for vigilant and coordinated efforts among security forces remains critical. These events not only affect the local community but also have broader implications for national and international security, underlining the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking.
