Alfonso Durazo Montaño – governor of Sonora since September 13, 2021, and member of Morena – stated on July 30, 2024, that the aircraft that transported the Sinaloa cartel leader Ismael Mario Zambada García, also known as “El Mayo” – 76 years old – as well as Joaquín Guzmán López, “El Güero Moreno” – 38 years old – son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, did not take off from the General Ignacio Pesqueira García International Airport in Hermosillo.
During a press conference, a reporter questioned the former head of the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC)—from December 1, 2018, until his resignation on November 1, 2020, during the government led by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador—about it.
“In research, we invariably work with hypotheses, and the original hypotheses have been cleared. The information becomes clearer every day. Based precisely on the information provided by the American authorities, we can conclude that the aircraft did not take off from Hermosillo,” said the governor of Sonora.
“An aircraft took off from here, and according to the American authorities, it carried the two characters repeatedly mentioned by the media. Simply put, the technical characteristics are different,” added Durazo Montaño.
In addition, the Sonoran governor detailed that while the plane that left Hermosillo International Airport was single-engine, the one that arrived in the United States with the two bosses and leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel was a twin-engine.
The reporter also asked the governor if there was communication between the state government and federal authorities regarding the mentioned case, to which Durazo Motaño responded that yes, but he requested to wait for the version of the Mexican government to avoid hypotheses.
“As the investigation is ongoing and the federal authority has opened an investigation file according to information that is already public, my recommendation would be to wait for the federal authority to share conclusive and reliable information beyond the initial hypotheses that implicated Hermosillo,” the state governor requested.
“I am in contact with federal authorities, and all their representatives are participating in the [security] table. To the best of our ability, we are all collaborating to consolidate the elements already part of the investigation file, which federal authorities have already opened,” Durazo Montaño explained.
