In August 2022, members of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) located an aircraft in Chiapas carrying 120 packages of drugs. The aircraft, which originated from South America, has since been handed over to the authorities.
The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) reported on July 15 about the declaration of abandonment of an aerial vehicle found in the municipality of Acapetahua. This aircraft was flying at a low altitude and was detected by the radars of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar).
On August 5, 2023, an aircraft carrying a Mexican flag entered Mexican airspace. Upon detection, ground military units were alerted, resulting in a coordinated operation to intercept the Cessna aircraft. The military forced the aircraft to land on a coastal plain.
A Sedena helicopter tracked the aircraft, and agents from the institution successfully forced the crew to land near the Los Coquitos ranch.
The occupants of the plane disembarked and fled into the mangrove area, successfully escaping. In their haste, they abandoned the aircraft and its cargo. Upon inspection, authorities discovered approximately 120 kilograms of cocaine distributed in 20 sacks of different colors.
Near the aircraft, six sacks containing 120 individually packed packages were found, along with 18 drums, ten of which contained hydrocarbons. The drugs, vehicles, and substances were subsequently placed under the custody of the authorities. According to El Heraldo de Chiapas, the seized cocaine shipment was valued at around $2.4 million.
The abandonment of the aircraft is linked to crimes involving clandestine flight and cocaine transportation. Initial reports estimated 120 kilograms of cocaine, but subsequent inspections revised the amount.
Chemical tests conducted by experts from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) confirmed the narcotic as cocaine hydrochloride, with a net weight of 118 kilograms, 356 grams, and 700 milligrams after removing the packaging. This was detailed in a recent FGR report. Consequently, the aircraft was handed over to the Federal Government.
In late June, authorities seized 350 kilograms of cocaine and arrested three individuals in Tapachula. The operation occurred at a residence on 15th North Avenue in the Francisco Villa neighborhood.
Chiapas has been a hotspot for conflict between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). On July 1st, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) confirmed the discovery of 19 bodies, some of them foreigners, in the municipality of La Concordia. The Sinaloa Cartel claimed responsibility for these homicides on social media.
