The United States Embassy in Mexico issued a travel advisory on April 10, 2024, for Ocozocoautla, a municipality in the central region of Chiapas, due to the recent acts of violence in the area.
According to a brief informative note from the US diplomatic headquarters, the restriction for US citizens began on April 10, 2024. It will last until optimal security conditions exist, allowing foreign individuals to travel or stay in said Chiapas municipality.
Location: Ocozocoautla, Chiapas. Event: We are aware of reports in the media of increased security activity in the municipality of Ocozocoautla, Chiapas. US government employees are instructed to avoid the area until further notice. The Travel Advisory for Chiapas from the Department of State is currently at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution due to crime,” the US Embassy stated.
“Actions to take: Avoid the area. If you are in the area, seek a safe shelter. Monitor local media for updates. Follow the instructions of local authorities; in case of emergency, call 911. Notify your friends and family about your location and safety,” detailed the US diplomatic headquarters.”
In what has happened throughout 2024, Ocozocoautla became the second municipality in Chiapas for which the United States Government issued a travel alert. In February of this year, a level 2 alert was also announced for the town of Suchiate, bordering Guatemala.
On April 8th, 2024, two members of the State Preventive Police (PEP) were killed by alleged hitmen from an organized crime group while they were in front of the offices of the Municipal Water and Sewer System (SAPAM) in Ocozocoautla.
The General Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Chiapas reported that the two agents were assigned to the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPyPC) and were on duty when attacked by a group of armed men.
On March 16, 2024, in the municipality of Ocozocoautla, a group of armed men attacked the headquarters of the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office, where two members of the Investigation Police were killed and one more was injured.
