Did The CJNG Announce Their Advance Through Nuevo León? This Is What We Know About The Threat That Appeared In Santa Catarina.

On the morning of January 28th, visitors of La Huasteca Park in the municipality of Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, reported the appearance of a threatening message allegedly left by members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

On one of the walls of the Rompepicos Dam, a blue graffiti read: “CJNG. We’re coming for Santa”. Despite the fact that the walls of the place have been characterized by the graffiti left there, this particular message stood out from the rest by announcing the apparent incursion of the “CJNG” cartel in the area.

Unlike other criminal organizations in the northern part of the country, the presence of CJNG in the state of Nuevo Leon is relatively recent, as it was confirmed in late 2021 by the former Secretary of Security, Aldo Fasci.

Reports from the US government, quoted by the local press, state that in recent years, this cartel has managed to infiltrate the Monterrey Metropolitan Area.

In this sense, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) revealed in 2020 that Nuevo Leon is one of the main states where the CJNG carries out financial operations to launder its profits from drug trafficking.

In addition to the above, it was announced in July 2023 that the CJNG had established an alliance with the faction of Los Metros from the Gulf Cartel, a group that during the first days of 2024 boasted about their arrival in Nuevo Leon through the municipality of Doctor Coss, in the eastern region, after defeating members of the Northeast Cartel (CDN).

Despite these indications, as of the date of this publication there are no official reports about the threat recently found at La Huasteca dam. Furthermore, it is worth highlighting that in previous years the CDN placed threatening messages in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Monterrey pretending to be the CJNG.

These narcobanners appeared at different points in the region in June 2019 and threatened Esteban Alejandro Cantú Montes, director of the State Investigations Agency, with “taking over the entire state” if he did not stop “protecting” organizations such as the Gulf Cartel.

Although the set of 11 messages had the signature of the CJNG, a subsequent operation by the AEI led to a confession by an alleged hitman belonging to the CDN that it was that criminal structure that printed the messages in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, and placed them in Nuevo León with the intention of blaming the cartel of the four letters and heating up the plaza.
