Judge Orders Trial for “El Betito”, Nephew of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén

Mario Alberto Cárdenas, alias ‘El Betito,’ an alleged member of the Gulf Cartel (CDG), was formally charged on December 29, 2025, by a control judge in Monterrey, Nuevo León. The suspect, identified as the nephew of former criminal leader Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, faces charges for his probable involvement in drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm, after being arrested in the southern part of the city of Monterrey.

Cárdenas’s arrest took place on December 21, 2025, at the intersection of Lázaro Cárdenas and Alfonso Reyes avenues. During the operation, carried out by elements of the Nuevo León State Police, Raúl Ramírez, 45 years old, and Kevin Alberto Castro, 19 years old, who is identified as a possible lieutenant in the criminal organization, were also apprehended.  Authorities seized a rifle, a handgun, two magazines, seven rounds of ammunition, 44 bags of narcotics, a digital scale, and cash from the detainees.

The federal judge deemed the arrests legal and considered the evidence presented by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) sufficient to initiate criminal proceedings. As a precautionary measure, mandatory pretrial detention was ordered, which they will serve at the Apodaca Social Reintegration Center (Cereso).  A three-month period was also set for the completion of the supplementary investigation, during which authorities will further investigate the defendants’ connections to drug trafficking in northeastern Mexico.

This event occurs in a context of intense surveillance of the Cárdenas Guillén family. Regarding the organization’s history, the arrest of “El Betito” follows that of Víctor Hugo Cárdenas Lozano, alias “El Betillo,” who was also located in Monterrey, Nuevo León, by elements of the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) in the Sierra Alta area. According to federal security sources, these individuals are considered instigators of violence in the state of Tamaulipas, where they are vying for control of drug trafficking routes to the United States.

The Gulf Cartel’s structure has faced several legal challenges recently. José Alfredo Cárdenas Martínez, alias “El Contador,” another nephew of Cárdenas Guillén and leader of the “Ciclones-Escorpiones” faction, had his pretrial detention modified on November 20, 2024, by order of Gregorio Salazar Hernández, head of the Specialized District Court for the Adversarial Criminal Justice System in the State of Mexico. However, Cárdenas Martínez still faces an extradition request from the U.S. Department of Justice on charges of international conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and cocaine.

Meanwhile, the organization’s founder, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, alias “El Mata Amigos,” remains incarcerated at Federal Social Readaptation Center (CEFERESO) No. 1 “El Altiplano,” in Almoloya de Juárez, State of Mexico, since his deportation on December 16, 2024. Alejandro Gertz Manero, then head of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), reported at the time that the former criminal leader has seven pending criminal cases in Mexico.

Federal authorities estimate that Cárdenas Guillén could face a sentence of up to 730 years in prison for crimes including aggravated homicide, organized crime, and money laundering. According to the Federal Government, surveillance of the capo’s associates and family members has been increased to prevent the restructuring of operational commands in border areas following his return to the country.
