García Luna’s nephew seeks legal protection against his involvement in a organized crime proceeding.

Edgar Anuar Rodríguez García, nephew of the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, filed an amparo against the criminal proceedings issued against him for the crimes of organized crime and operations with resources of illicit origin.

The said protection was admitted to the process by Judge Segundo de Distrito in Amparo and Federal Trials in the State of Mexico, Diana Abraján Peña, who set the next 29th of January to celebrate the constitutional hearing, according to LatinUs reports.

Anuar Rodriguez’s demand for guarantees has to do with the resolution dated December 20, 2023, which is linked to criminal case 43/2023. On that occasion, Garcia Luna’s nephew was linked to a process for the related crimes. Likewise, preventive imprisonment was imposed as a precautionary measure while complementary investigations were carried out in a period of six months.

Gloria García Luna, mother of Anuar and sister of the former Mexican official, was also linked to the process in that same hearing for her alleged responsibility in money laundering and organized crime, activities in which more than 5 thousand million pesos would have been diverted.

Gloria and Anuar were arrested on December 14th, 2023 in Cuernavaca, Morelos. According to the National Register of Detentions (RND), their apprehension took place around 11:00 hours in the Lomas de Selva district by elements of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO).

While the sister of the “super cop” was admitted into the female prison of Morelos, his nephew remains in the prison of El Altiplano. According to the reports of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), both allegedly simulated contracts with federal prisons of the country and facade companies between 2011 and 2019.

They are not the only relatives of García Luna under the watchful eye of Mexican authorities. In July of last year, Interpol issued a red notice against Linda Cristina Pereyra, Gloria Esperanza, Luz María and Humberto García Luna, identified as the wife and siblings of the former Secretary of Security. This was due to alleged millions in misappropriated funds for federal prison contracts.

However, journalist Carlos Loret de Mola disclosed at the time that Humberto and Luz María had already passed away in 2020 and 2023, respectively.

With regards to Genaro García Luna, who served as Secretary of Public Security from 2006 to 2012, he is currently at the Metropolitan Detention Center of New York, in the United States (USA). This is after he was found guilty of five crimes related to drug trafficking, due to the support he provided to the Sinaloa Cartel in exchange for million-dollar bribes.

Although his sentence was scheduled for March 1st of this year, the Justice Department asked Judge Brian Cogan to postpone it “until an April date or any later time”. In that sense, the act was scheduled until June 24th.

Due to the gravity of the crimes, Genaro faces a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and a maximum of life imprisonment.
