“Kenneth Lee Salazar, Head of the United States Embassy in Mexico, stated on February 8, 2024, that the investigation by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), including one of its agencies, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), into allegations that in 2006 Andrés Manuel López Obrador received at least 2 million dollars from the Sinaloa Cartel for his presidential campaign, was a “closed case” for the government led by President Joseph Biden.”
This information was published on January 30, 2024, in the American media outlets ProPublica – an independent news agency – and InSight Crime – a foundation dedicated to studying and researching threats to national and citizen security in Latin America and the Caribbean. It was also featured in an opinion column written by Mexican journalist Anabel Hernandez Garcia and published in the German media outlet Deutsche Welle (DW).
Interviewed by representatives of various media outlets, at the end of the meeting he held with the members of the Senate’s Commission on Labor and Social Security, the American diplomat responded briefly, after being questioned about the topic.
“Is the case of alleged financing of President Lopez Obrador’s campaign already closed for your country? This investigation by the DEA, which was published in an article,” a reporter questioned. “Case closed,” responded Salazar, who, however, did not answer the questions about whether the US Drug Enforcement Administration would be obligated to clarify the issue and, if necessary, offer apologies to the Mexican president.”
