Before his capture and extradition to the United States for Conspiracy and Distribution of Fentanyl, Luis Alfredo “el Wicho” Garibay Félix had his base of operations in the Gulf of Santa Clara, Sonora, declared the Central Prosecutor of the State of Baja California, Rafael Orozco Vargas.
Wicho, identified as a generator of violence in Mexicali – and linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, in the faction of Los Chapitos – was arrested on January 31, 2022 in the ejido Chiapas III, in the valley of Mexicali. This after a confrontation with elements of the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA). Garibay Felix was linked to the process and placed in preventive prison, until he met the established term and a judge in Mexico granted him freedom.
Nevertheless, authorities from the United States issued an arrest warrant against him for the crimes of Conspiracy and Distribution of Fentanyl. Therefore, Mexican authorities handed over Garibay Félix to the CBP authorities in the neighboring country, according to the State Public Security Secretary on December 31, 2023.
Regarding this, Rafael Orozco Vargas indicated that, based on the investigations conducted, the Wicho had its base of operations in the Gulf of Santa Clara, Sonora. However, he ventured to Mexicali to carry out an operation on the date he was captured.
According to what was documented by Semanario Zeta, the night of the capture of the Wicho, he and four armed people were carrying out an operation to attack Jesús Alexander Sánchez Félix, alias “el Ruso”, leader of the cell “Los Rusos” – the main operator of Ismael “el Mayo” Zambada in Mexicali.
The State Attorney General commented that, although some members of the Garibay family had already been identified as generators of violence in the Mexicali Valley, Wicho had his base of operations in the Santa Clara Gulf prior to his capture.
“This is the last person -the Wicho- who remains of this family group -the Garibay- who dedicated themselves to these kinds of activities. Evidently, since he was arrested, there was a noticeable change in the decrease of criminal events, of organized delinquency, at least in southern valley -Mexicali-“, he expressed.
Although Wicho was extradited to the United States, Orozco Vargas mentioned that there are still two investigation folders against him at the General Attorney’s Office of Baja California (FGEBC). These are for crimes related to homicides.
