With 2,604 victims of intentional homicide, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador ended in September 2024, for a total of 196,216 in his administration, according to preliminary figures presented by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
In May 2023, according to an analysis based on figures from Inegi (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), from the SESNSP, the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador had already surpassed the number of intentional homicides that were recorded during the period of his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto, which held the record.
Of the 196,216 victims reported up to the preliminary cut-off, they represented a 25 percent increase in said crime with respect to those that occurred during the Enrique Peña Nieto Administration – which closed with 157,158 homicides.
During López Obrador’s administration -from December 1, 2018 to September 30, 2024-, the states with the highest rates of intentional homicide victims per 100 thousand inhabitants, were: Colima, Morelos, Baja California, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Sonora, Guanajuato, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Michoacán in that order respectively.
