What happened

Nigeria’s NDLEA said it dismantled a commercial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu state and arrested two men accused of operating it with a suspected Mexican cartel member. Authorities seized large quantities of precursor chemicals and said the case is part of a wider transnational investigation.

Reporting and context

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu state and arrested two men accused of coordinating production with a suspected member of a Mexican cartel. The agency identified the detainees as Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, 45, known as “Brown,” and Chukwu Georginus Monday, 60, known as “George.” Nigerian authorities said the Mexican-linked suspect, Rodríguez Villanueva, was based in Mexico City, left Nigeria and is wanted.

According to the NDLEA, the laboratory was located in Eziama, in Obeagu, Awgu district, after investigators tracked Brown through Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states. The site contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment that authorities said could support commercial-scale production. Investigators seized 690 liters of methylamine, 1,000 liters of isopropyl alcohol, 300 liters of hydrochloric acid, 290 liters each of toluene and acetone, 400 liters of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilograms of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilograms of lead acetate and 769.6 kilograms of tartaric acid.

El Financiero reported that the NDLEA linked the materials to methamphetamine production using the P2P method. The two defendants face five charges related to conspiracy, organizing, managing and financing a drug-trafficking organization, as well as illegal possession of chemical precursors; proceedings are scheduled to continue on Oct. 21, 2026. The agency said this was Nigeria’s fourth large-scale methamphetamine laboratory dismantled since May, while its spokesperson told AFP that at least five Mexicans had been arrested in Nigeria since May in operations involving methamphetamine laboratories.
