Reporting and context

A search collective reported finding a clandestine grave containing human remains near Las Víboras, in Culiacán, Sinaloa, according to Noroeste Seguridad. Members of Madres en Lucha por su Regreso a Casa reported the discovery at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Noroeste Seguridad reported that security authorities did not arrive to secure the area until around noon on Wednesday, Oct. 7, nearly 20 hours after the collective reported the finding. The search was based on information connected to another clandestine grave located in the area in 2017, the collective said.

Authorities must process the site and conduct further investigations before establishing the number of remains and beginning any possible identification.

The location remained under official guard as the investigation continued. The report did not state whether the remains had been formally examined or identified.
