70-year sentence in Ecatepec double killing
The sentence covers the February 2024 killings of the Romero Segura brothers.
Enrique Lagunas Castillo was sentenced to 70 years in prison for killing Morena congressional hopeful Yair Martín Romero Segura and his brother Johan in Ecatepec, Infobae reported, citing the State of Mexico prosecutor's office.
The brothers represented a local association of small business owners and transport operators. The court also imposed a 542,850-peso fine and ordered 237,768 pesos in compensation. According to the prosecutor's account, the brothers were shot on February 10, 2024, after an argument between rival transport organizations in Santa Clara Coatitla.
Yair died at the scene; Johan died after being taken to hospital. Infobae reported that a bodyguard also fatally shot another participant, identified as “El Michoacano.” That death was separate from the two killings covered by this sentence.
Lagunas Castillo was already jailed following a robbery arrest when authorities served the homicide warrant. A judge ordered him to stand trial on February 29, 2024. Prosecutors said evidence presented during the proceedings established his responsibility for the brothers' deaths.
