Reporting and context
Francisco Manuel Romero Carranza, known as “El Meny Carranza,” was killed during a joint security operation in Huatabampo, Sonora, after escaping from Hermosillo’s Cereso 2 prison in July, according to El Imparcial. Four people were detained and an arsenal was seized during the confrontation.
The federal Security Cabinet said Navy personnel, federal Security and Citizen Protection Ministry officers and Sonora state prosecutors came under gunfire near San Antonio, in the ejido 6 de Enero. The Cabinet said officers returned fire and Romero Carranza died during the operation. It identified him as a priority target and attributed violence in the region to him.
El Imparcial reported that Sonora prosecutors had offered one million pesos for information leading to each of three escaped inmates. Their escape was reported early on July 11 after a roll call led to the discovery of a wooden ladder believed to have been used to leave the prison.
Romero Carranza escaped alongside Omar Milán Tena, known as “El Mike,” and Paul Alexis Téllez Olguín, known as “El Güero.” The outlet said both remained fugitives at the time of its report. Three prison supervisors and one operational staff member were arrested over their failure to prevent the escape.
The report said Romero Carranza faced charges including aggravated kidnapping, attempted aggravated homicide, criminal association, unlawful deprivation of liberty, corruption of minors and marijuana possession. The reported million-peso reward was for each fugitive, rather than a combined amount for all three.
