What happened
Infobae México reported that Ovidio Guzmán López's in-person status hearing was moved from December 7 to April 14, 2027, by agreement between defense and prosecutors. The report distinguishes the status review from sentencing and describes his July 2025 plea and cooperation.
Reporting and context
Ovidio Guzmán López's in-person status hearing in Chicago has been postponed from December 7, 2026, to April 14, 2027, at 10:30 a.m. local time. According to Infobae México, a court notice issued on October 14 records the change by agreement between the defense and prosecutors.
The hearing before Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman had already been moved in September from October 28 to December 7. Infobae México reported that the latest notice, Document 1135 in case 1:09-cr-00383, cancels the December appearance and excludes the intervening period from the procedural time calculation.
Guzmán López, known as El Ratón and a son of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, pleaded guilty on July 11, 2025. The report says he admitted two drug-trafficking conspiracy counts and two counts of knowingly participating in a continuing criminal enterprise, resolving charges brought in northern Illinois and southern New York.
In his plea agreement, he admitted coordinating shipments of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl and other drugs from Mexico to the U.S. border, sometimes in loads of hundreds or thousands of kilograms, according to the outlet. Infobae also reported that he accepted an $80 million fine as part of the agreement.
The April appearance is a status hearing, at which the judge and parties review progress in the case. Infobae said it could allow the Justice Department to tell Coleman whether it still intends to seek a reduced sentence based on Guzmán López's cooperation.
The report cites the docket notice shared by security reporters, including Jesús García through his X account, @JesusGar. The accompanying gallery retains that notice alongside two distinct archival photographs identified by the source as showing Guzmán López after his January 2023 arrest and during his extradition to the United States.
