Mexico's Navy seized a boat carrying approximately 1.2 tons of cocaine off Oaxaca, arrested six people and transferred 46 packages to federal prosecutors, officials reported.
Reporting and context
Mexico's Navy seized a boat carrying approximately 1.2 tons of cocaine in Pacific waters about 366 nautical miles south of Huatulco, Oaxaca, according to Luces del Siglo. The operation resulted in the arrest of six people, five of them foreigners, Omar García Harfuch, Mexico's secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, reported.
The Navy said the operation was carried out with support from naval and airborne units during a maritime patrol. García Harfuch reported that the Mexican Navy coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, although officials did not provide details about the cooperation. Authorities said the seized boat contained 46 packages of cocaine, which were taken to Puerto Chiapas and placed at the disposal of Mexico's Attorney General's Office.
Luces del Siglo reported that the seizure represents an estimated 289.104 million-peso financial loss for criminal groups and prevented roughly 2.536 million doses from reaching the streets. The Security Cabinet reported that more than 90 tons of cocaine have been seized in maritime operations during the current administration. The Attorney General's Office will determine the substance's final weight, so the figures remain subject to that procedural assessment.
