Reporting and context
Authorities arrested a man identified as Iván “N,” alias “El Tanque,” in Zapopan, Jalisco, on October 5, according to Luces del Siglo. The outlet reported that Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, described him as an alleged regional operator of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) with activities in Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Puebla.
García Harfuch said the arrest followed a joint operation involving Mexico’s Defense Ministry, the SSPC and the National Guard, supported by intelligence and investigative agents from the SSPC and the Attorney General’s Office. The source said authorities arrested Iván “N” in flagrante and seized a vehicle, a firearm and various drugs.
Luces del Siglo also reported that the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned “El Tanque” in September 2024 over alleged CJNG links and identified him as being close to former CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho.” García Harfuch listed alleged connections to extortion, fuel theft, homicide, money laundering and drug trafficking, and said authorities also linked him to the alleged 2015 attack on a Mexican Army helicopter in Jalisco. The detainee is to be placed at the disposal of the specialized organized-crime prosecutor’s office, which will determine his legal status.
