Chapodiputada recounts alleged tunnel escape with El Chapo

Infobae México reported that Lucero Sánchez López, known as the “Chapodiputada,” described an alleged escape with Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán through a drainage tunnel in Culiacán, Sinaloa. In an interview published by the Double G Channel, Sánchez said the episode took place between February 17 and 18, 2014, shortly before Mexican naval forces arrested Guzmán at the Miramar residential development in Mazatlán. Infobae México said Sánchez recalled moving through darkness and wastewater after a bathtub was lifted to reveal access to an underground stairway.

According to the account reported by Infobae México, Sánchez said she, Guzmán, a bodyguard identified as “El Cóndor,” and a cook entered the tunnel after receiving an alert that authorities had arrived. She described difficulty finding an interior door, an explosive sound above the bathtub that she attributed to military elements attempting to enter the house, and injuries to her hands as the group moved through the passage. She also said the group used a cellphone briefly for light before Guzmán asked that it be turned off, and that they eventually reached the surface near the Humaya River after traveling roughly two kilometers.

The report connected the episode to Operation Gárgola, the government operation that preceded Guzmán’s arrest, and recounted an official 2014 explanation that authorities had found houses linked by tunnels and drainage routes. It also said Sánchez disputed the explanation that a visible injury on Guzmán’s face was caused by the Navy, telling the interviewer that he had been hurt in the tunnel.
