Federal security authorities and the State of Mexico prosecutor's office arrested Luis Miranda Contreras, his family and a bodyguard over an alleged telephone-extortion operation that used cloned voices of officials. Reporting and context

Mexican federal security authorities and the State of Mexico prosecutor's office arrested a family accused of using artificial intelligence to imitate the voices of government officials in telephone extortion schemes, according to El Diario de Chihuahua. The case involves Luis Miranda Contreras, a former treasurer of Michoacán, his wife, their two children and a bodyguard, the newspaper reported.

Investigators said one caller first posed as a high-level official's private secretary. A second person then allegedly used a cloned voice of that official to demand money, contracts or the appointment of specific people to public posts. El Diario de Chihuahua reported that the group allegedly demanded cash and that some banking operations were conducted through an architecture and construction company linked to one of Miranda's daughters.

Authorities said the alleged operation had been active since 2021 and was based at a property in Metepec, State of Mexico. The family was arrested there, and officials seized 19 cellphones, dozens of SIM cards and luxury vehicles. All of the detainees were charged in connection with extortion and placed in pretrial detention, according to the report.

The newspaper also described a separate case involving Miranda Contreras. He was arrested in 2017 over alleged payments totaling 26.6 million pesos to suppliers who, according to the Michoacán prosecutor's office at the time, had not provided the services billed. In 2018, a criminal court overturned the formal-prison order, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to keep him subject to that proceeding.
