Reporting and context
Mexican and U.S. maritime authorities seized a boat carrying 46 packages containing 1.2 tons of suspected cocaine off Huatulco, Oaxaca, according to El Financiero. Six people were arrested in the operation, including five foreign nationals, the report said, citing Mexico’s Security Secretariat.
The operation took place during a maritime patrol and surveillance flight. Mexican Navy surface and air units were deployed, and the seized boat and drugs were taken to Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas, before being placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office. El Financiero reported that authorities estimated the seizure caused an economic loss of 289.104 million pesos for criminal groups and prevented approximately 2.536 million doses from reaching the public.
Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, said on social media that the Navy had seized more than 90 tons of cocaine in maritime operations during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. He described the seizures as preventing drug sales and revenue that criminal organizations could use to buy weapons, corrupt young people and authorities, and generate violence. The Navy also said it would maintain security and surveillance operations along Mexico’s northern border, with cooperation conducted through established institutional channels and respecting each country’s jurisdiction.
