Reporting and context
A control judge ordered Rey “N” to remain in custody after linking him to proceedings over an alleged attempt to take cocaine and fentanyl out of Mexico through the Otay border crossing in Tijuana, Baja California. Authorities said the truck driver was stopped after inspectors found the substances in a hidden compartment in his tractor-trailer. The judge imposed mandatory pretrial detention and set three months for the complementary investigation.
According to Infobae México, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office accused Rey “N” of an offense against health involving the attempted removal of the substances from the country. The operation involved Mexico’s National Customs Agency, the Mexican Army and the National Guard, with an X-ray inspection and assistance from a canine named “Chocolate.” Initial reports cited 184 cocaine packages and 11 fentanyl packages, or 195 packages weighing approximately 249 kilograms.
Infobae México reported that a later forensic assessment changed the preliminary figure. The final FECOR assessment put the combined total at 194.9 kilograms, including 183.9 kilograms of cocaine and 10.9 kilograms of fentanyl. The source also reported that the dog helped locate the hidden compartment and that Rey “N” would remain at La Mesa Social Reinsertion Center in Tijuana while the investigation continues.
