Four Detained in Oaxaca Extortion Investigation

Luces del Siglo reports that state and federal forces detained C.M.V., known as “El Chabelo,” and three other people during an operation against the Alianza de Sindicatos y Asociaciones del Estado de Oaxaca (Asaeo). Authorities identified C.M.V. as an alleged financial operator of the group, which is under investigation for extortion, protection payments, property dispossession, contract killings and intentional homicide.
The operation included 12 searches in Oaxaca's metropolitan area and the seizure of seven properties, according to the report. The Oaxaca Attorney General's Office said investigators believed those properties served as places for the organization's leaders to stay and operate.
Luces del Siglo reports that this was the third phase of operations against the group since August 27. Authorities reported cumulative totals of 32 searches and 16 detentions. Nine people were arrested during the first phase and three during the second, on September 2.
The Oaxaca Attorney General's Office said the four latest detainees were being transferred to prosecutors, who would determine their legal status.
