Semar Forces Attacked in Petatlán, Guerrero: Nearly a Dozen Arrested, One Aggressor Killed

Elements of the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) were attacked by armed civilians in Petatlán, Guerrero, resulting in the capture of nearly a dozen individuals and the death of one of the alleged attackers.

The confrontation occurred in the municipality of San Jeronimo when members of the 36th Marine Infantry Battalion were conducting routine surveillance patrols and came under fire.

The Guerrero Peace Building Coordination reported the incident on Monday, September 23rd, although the attack had taken place “in recent days,” with authorities not specifying the exact date. Semar’s response highlights ongoing security challenges in the region.

In recent months, SEMAR (the Mexican Navy) has carried out significant drug seizures along the shores of Guerrero. One of the most notable occurred at the end of July when authorities intercepted more than a ton and a half of cocaine near the port of Acapulco.

Floating packages resembling black sacks were discovered approximately 113 kilometers southeast of Acapulco. Tied together, the bundles contained around 1,610 kilograms of cocaine. This marked a major success in SEMAR’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking along the Pacific coast.

A month earlier, in late June, Navy agents seized over 100 packets of cocaine in a separate operation, also off the coast of Guerrero. Initially, they confiscated 37 black bundles, each containing bricks of the drug. During subsequent patrols, they discovered an additional 66 bundles with similar packaging. In total, 3.5 tons of cocaine were confiscated and handed over to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

These operations reflect SEMAR’s critical role in intercepting narcotics shipments destined for international markets, particularly those moving through Mexico’s Pacific waters.
