In a recent operation led by federal forces, a U.S. citizen and former Army member, William Louis Ahnert, was detained in Río Bravo, Tamaulipas. According to Breitbart, the arrest took place during a raid on a field used by the Los Escorpiones faction of the Gulf Cartel.
The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that Ahnert was apprehended while authorities searched the field. He was swiftly transported to Mexico City to face charges for allegedly manufacturing landmines and other explosives for the criminal group.
Journalists Ildefonso Ortiz and Brandon Darby noted that Ahnert is an ex-member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Although details of his military background remain unknown, in 2017, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a search warrant for Ahnert for alleged sexual assault in Arapahoe County.
This recent arrest highlights the ongoing battle against organized crime in Tamaulipas, where officials have increasingly encountered explosive devices. Earlier this year, authorities confirmed the discovery of a landmine in the border region, indicating a shift in the tactics of criminal factions like Los Escorpiones.

Ahnert’s arrest and the seizure of multiple explosive devices underscore the heightened security challenges in the region as law enforcement continues to combat drug and human trafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border.
