Authorities in Chiapas carried out the capture of Jason Antonio “Y”, a man originally from Guatemala who is wanted by American authorities for being allegedly a partner of José Ángel Rivera Zazueta, also known as El Flaco. The latter is identified as an operator of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Guatemala media outlets were the ones who reported the capture of Jason Antonio, information revealed by The Associated Press after Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office agents requested to remain anonymous, as they did not have permission to share what had happened.
According to reports, the capture was carried out on Sunday, February 18th, but the information related to the case was shared one day later.
The arrest was made near the airport of the city of Tapachula, and later, Jason was handed over to Chiapas prosecution officials.
The man of Guatemalan origin was sanctioned by US authorities in January of last year, resulting in his properties and assets in the neighboring country to the north being frozen.
It should be noted that at the end of January of last year, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Department of the Treasury sanctioned several individuals, including a man identified as an operator for the Sinaloa Cartel.
One of the men was José Ángel Rivera Zazueta, a Mexican who would be in charge of a criminal cell focused on drug manufacturing and trafficking with headquarters in both Culiacán, Sinaloa, and the capital of the country.
His role consists of obtaining chemical precursors from China for the production of various drugs such as fentanyl, ketamine, and methamphetamines.
According to investigations by Italian authorities, El Flaco is one of the main operators of Mayo Zambada. It was in 2019 that Ángel Rivera allegedly met with his partners in Sicily to organize the shipment of 1.5 tons of cocaine to be sold to the Italian mafia.
Through Operation Falcon, it was possible to learn about the way El Flaco transported drugs to Europe. According to the journalist Anabel Hernández, this man would have been located after checking in with real documents at a luxurious hotel in Italy.
In addition, recordings obtained by authorities in Italy indicate that he was a very important man within the Sinaloa Cartel, being identified as the second in command within the organization.
On February 13, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Service reported on the conviction of a man from Guatemala, identified as a criminal leader with ties to the Pacific Cartel.
Josué Adán Lemus Lara, also known by the alias Fenix, was convicted of conspiracy to traffic cocaine by sea.
Both he and his brother would be the leaders of a transnational criminal group.
“The organization was moving tons of cocaine from South America to Guatemala by sea, and by land to their Mexican counterparts, including members of the Sinaloa Cartel, to import them to the United States,” reads the report from US authorities.
