Edgar “N”, a man identified by authorities as the alleged coordinator of the Gulf Cartel, specifically the faction known as Scorpion Group, was arrested in Nuevo León.
The arrest was carried out by military and Civil Force personnel and was reported on Sunday, February 18, by the Coordination Group for Security in Nuevo León through their social media platforms.
“In a joint effort between the Seventh Military Zone and Civil Force, the arrest of Edgar N., also known as El Bélico 55, was achieved. Federal authorities were looking for him due to his role in coordinating and logistic planning within the C.D.G Scorpion faction,” authorities announced.
In the images shared by the authorities, it can be seen that the mentioned individual was captured along with other people whose names are not known or if they would have any role in the criminal group. In total, it can be seen that security forces arrested five individuals.
While in another photograph, you can see that El Bélico was wearing a black cap with a money sign. The brief statement from the authorities does not indicate whether the now-captured individuals were carrying any illegal substances or firearms, as none of these objects can be identified in the photographs.
Likewise, the authorities did not reveal the place where the five people were arrested. Judging by the images – in which the detained individuals’ faces were covered – the majority of the detainees are men, and it seems that there are two women in the group, one of whom was wearing pink clothes.
Last January, José Alberto, also known as La Kena, identified as the leader of the Gulf Cartel’s Scorpions faction, was also arrested in Nuevo León. This detention took place in the municipality of San Pedro Garza García on January 18.
Kena was captured without the security agents making any shots, and the reports indicated that the man was detained after being recognized by a security camera located in a shopping center in the area.
Similarly, in some photographs of his arrest, he could be seen wearing a piece of clothing with several images related to the Gulf Cartel. Authorities in Tamaulipas were offering a reward of up to two and a half million pesos for any information leading to the arrest of La Kena.
Later, the authorities carried out raids on two properties allegedly linked to La Kena. In other actions, a judge determined that said individual would not be linked to the trial, and even the organization Juzgadoras y Juzgadores Federales (JUFED) shared a document in which they explained what happened and even pointed out that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) “strayed from its obligation to investigate.”
Inside the Gulf Cartel, several factions have been identified, some of which have even created alliances. For example, the armed branch known as “Los Ciclones” has reportedly reached agreements with the “Grupo Escorpión,” as documented by Insight Crime.
On the other hand, one of the former leaders of the Gulf Cartel will be released from prison in the United States. This is Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, who will be released at the end of August 2024, as stated in the records of the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). As a result, Cárdenas Guillén filed for a protective order to avoid being captured in Mexico after leaving prison in the US.
