A total of four members of the Municipal Police of Celaya and two civilians were killed, around 8:00 p.m. on January 24, 2024, after a confrontation with a group of armed men on the road to Salvatierra, at the height of Santa María del Refugio community.
The events occurred while municipal police officers were carrying out patrol duties in the area. When they were attacked by gunshots, the officers requested support from additional elements of the Celaya Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSCC), who went to the area and repelled the attack.
“The Celaya Citizen Security Secretariat (SSCC) reports that on Wednesday night, four members of the Municipal Police General Directorate died after being cowardly attacked by armed individuals on the Celaya – Salvatierra highway,” the institution reported in a statement.
After the ambush, a security operation was deployed on the Celaya-Salvatierra highway, with the addition of state Public Security agents and elements of the National Guard.
“A search operation is being carried out for the possible suspects in conjunction with the Public Security Forces of the State (FSPE), National Guard (GN) and the National Defense Secretariat (SEDENA),” the SSCC explained.
“The Department of Citizen Security will not back down in the fight against crime, and joins in the grief felt by the families and friends of our fallen colleagues who were carrying out their duty,” stated the SSCC.
“After the cowardly attack against officers of the Municipal Police of Celaya, the Governor of the State [Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo] has instructed us to intensify operations in the area in coordination with municipal, federal, and FGE authorities to find those responsible for this event. Jesús Oviedo Herrera, head of the State Government Secretariat, wrote, ‘We send our heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen officers in the line of duty.’ “
On the other hand, Higinio Villanueva Hidario and Isaac del Ángel Meza, commander and agent, respectively, of the Ministerial Investigative Police (PIM), from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Guerrero, were deprived of their freedom on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, by members of the Michoacana Family in Taxco de Alarcón, and later found murdered on the 24th day of the same month and year, in the community of Tlamacazapa.
The agents of the state department of justice had been intercepted while traveling aboard a van from the Guerrero Prosecutor’s Office on the Taxco-Pilcaya highway, near the municipality of Ixtapan de la Sal, in the State of Mexico.
“The State Attorney General’s Office is carrying out the corresponding investigations and procedures to clarify the mentioned crime. Likewise, there are ongoing operations in the area by agents from the State Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministerial Investigative Police, and the Forensic Services, as well as members of the Mexican Army and National Guard,” stated the state prosecutor’s office in a statement.
