During the night of January 19th, journalist and news presenter Azucena Uresti Mireles surprisingly announced the end of her program ‘Azucena at 10’ broadcasted on Milenio TV. Through it, the communicator not only reported on the most relevant events in Mexican politics on a daily basis, but also on security matters; which is why she received threats from organized crime and was even chosen by ‘Los Chapitos’ to share a letter in which they distanced themselves from the production of fentanyl.
The letter allegedly written by the sons of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was revealed by Uresti on his program on May 3, 2023. It is a four-page document. At the beginning, it can be read that it was specifically addressed to the production of ‘Azucena a las 10’.
“Today, José Refugio Rodríguez, lawyer for the family, sent us a letter on behalf of the children of Guzmán Loera. This is the first time that ‘El Chapo’’s children seek to communicate, the first time in history of the Sinaloa Cartel,” declared Uresti, before sharing the complete correspondence, arguing “its journalistic relevance.”

The text written by the brothers Joaquín Guzmán López, Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar was sent to Uresti with the intention of publicly distancing themselves from fentanyl trafficking; an act for which they are being sought by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
This letter aims to clarify several points, firstly, to give a background of what is happening in Sinaloa, regarding the one that is announced as the Sinaloa cartel, the truth behind the conference of April 14, 2023 given by the Anti-Drug Agency of the most powerful country in the world and the use of the brand or label ‘Chapo’ Guzmán and sons, as read in the first paragraph.
Throughout the letter, the three sons of ‘El Chapo’ who remain free assured that they are not in charge of the Sinaloa Cartel. They clarified that, in the face of constant news that references them, they have always shown prudence and neutrality, but after being accused by the US Department of Justice of leading ‘the largest, most violent, and prolific fentanyl trafficking operation in the world’, they decided to tell their side of the story.
“The Chapitos have never produced, processed or marketed fentanyl or any of its derivatives. We are victims of persecution and have been turned into scapegoats. We hope this message reaches the appropriate people,” they expressed in another part of the text.
It should be noted that this was the first time that Guzmán Loera’s children stated they were not involved in the fentanyl business. Last October, through narcomantas, they warned that anyone involved in the production or distribution of the opioid would be punished.
