Security forces escort suspected CJNG operatives in images released by authorities after coordinated arrests in Jalisco and Nayarit. Mexican authorities have announced the arrest of Luis Ignacio “N”, alias “Cárdenas”, a regional Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) operative, during a joint raid in Tepic, Nayarit . The 46-year-old suspect was taken into custody without incident as part of coordinated operations targeting cartel leaders in western Mexico. Officials describe the capture as a significant blow to the CJNG’s criminal infrastructure in the region .
The multi-agency operation in Tepic was carried out on January 13, 2026, by elements of Mexico’s Army (SEDENA), the National Guard (GN), and the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) . It was coordinated with a parallel raid the same day in Zapopan, Jalisco, where another suspected CJNG cell leader was arrested . Authorities say these actions were the result of extensive intelligence work and formed part of a broader strategy to weaken organized crime in the country’s west . Luis Ignacio “Cárdenas” is alleged to be a regional operator for the CJNG across Nayarit and Jalisco, responsible for coordinating drug trafficking and other crimes on behalf of the cartel .
According to the federal Security Cabinet, “Cárdenas” oversaw the air and maritime smuggling of narcotics – using small aircraft and boats via a network of clandestine airstrips and ports – to move drugs originating in Central America onward toward the United States . He also allegedly managed violent criminal activities in the area, including extortion, kidnapping, and homicide, and handled financial operations (money laundering) for the CJNG . Investigators have identified him as one of the principal generators of violence in the region due to these activities . Officials noted that his alias “Cárdenas” was well-known within the cartel’s ranks, and his capture removes a key coordinator of the CJNG’s logistical and financial network in Nayarit .
During the arrest in Tepic, authorities seized multiple items of evidence from the suspect’s possession . The confiscated materials, according to an official report, included:
- Weapons: 1 assault rifle (“arma larga”) and 1 magazine, along with 20 rounds of ammunition .
- Narcotics: Several doses of cocaine and methamphetamine packaged for distribution .
- Vehicles: 1 vehicle used in the suspect’s operations .
- Electronics: 3 mobile phones and 1 tablet device containing criminal communications .
These items were secured as evidence and the raid location (a residence in Tepic) was sealed off by authorities for further forensic examination . In the related Jalisco operation, security forces likewise seized firearms, hundreds of drug doses, several vehicles, and other assets from the CJNG cell led by “El Uber,” highlighting the scope of the cartel’s resources across the two states .
Formal charges are expected following the suspect’s handover to federal prosecutors. The government has indicated that Luis Ignacio “Cárdenas” will be investigated for organized crime, drug trafficking, illegal weapons possession, and other offenses tied to his alleged role in CJNG’s extortion, kidnapping and murder schemes . Authorities confirmed that the detainee’s rights were read at the moment of arrest and that he, along with the other suspects captured in Jalisco, has been placed at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry (Ministerio Público) to determine their legal status .
Federal officials praised the successful operations in Jalisco and Nayarit. In a public statement, Mexico’s Security Cabinet stressed that these arrests “reaffirm [the government’s] commitment to act in a coordinated manner to detain violent actors and strengthen security in the country.” The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), which oversees the Security Cabinet, noted that such joint efforts by SEDENA, GN, FGR and other agencies are integral to the national strategy against cartels . Local authorities in Nayarit have lauded the federal operation, which removed a high-level CJNG operative from their state. The arrest of “Cárdenas” is being heralded as an important victory in the ongoing campaign to curb cartel violence and disrupt the CJNG’s illicit drug transport and finance networks in the region .
